Microsporidial – Briony Hughes

Microsporidial is a meditation on the impact of an Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection in Briony’s companion animal, Honey. E- cuniculi is a protozoan parasite which primarily affects the brain and spinal cord of rabbits, resulting in head-tilt, paralysis, hind-leg paresis, tremors, cataracts and renal failure. On 13/12/2019 Honey rapidly declined, could no longer stand by herself, and Briony and her partner Laura were told to prepare to put her to sleep.

Within 32 hours, supported by a dedicated veterinary team and against all odds, Honey managed to regulate her body, stand up when rolling over, keep her digestive tract moving, and eventually return home. This collection of micropoems explores the intimacies between a range of bodies – animal, human, parasite and water.

Robert Prosser lives and works in Alpbach / Tyrol and in Vienna. He studied Comparative Literature and Anthropology, travelled widly from Asia to Africa. A Performer as well as an Writer, previously active in Rap and Graffiti, now also a Moderator and Curator (p.e. for Babelsprech – Plattform for contemporary poetry). Important for his artistic work are research and the adaptation of the texts for the stage in form of recitation or performance. Publications include the novel Gemma Habibi (Ullstein, 2019) and the upcoming reportage Beirut im Sommer (Beirut in Summer, Klever, 2020). Max Höfler, born in 1978, is a Graz, Austria, based author, sound artist, curator and part of the renowned Austrian artist association Forum Stadtpark and the international radio art collective radia. He is the co-founder of the international literature network CROWD. Max Höfler is writing experimental texts, which are influenced by the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century. In his work he is focusing on the different manifestations of the coercions of capitalistic societies.

Franziska Füchsl lives in Vienna and Kiel. She studied German and English at Vienna University and »Sprache und Gestalt« (approximately language and form or figure or gnome or) at the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design. She is a member of the Viennese based translation associations Versatorium and Neuberg College. The latter is an initiative to build a Col-lege at a former train station.

9781912960576This anthology is published to coincide with the Urban Tree Festival in May 2020. In the Spring of 2020 the Museum of Walking invited people to submit a poem or a flash writing piece of 250 words (or under) inspired by the anniversaries of four British poets and writers who have put nature writing on the map.

Canopy includes the winning pieces from Paul Chown, Nick Fox, Deborah Harrison, Robert Hogg, Rachel Playforth, Albert Pellicer, E. E. Rhodes, Mark Stewart, Joseph Surtees and Amanda Tuke.

The winning poems were judged by Peter Jaeger (Professor of Poetics at the University of Roehampton in London, where he also directs the Exploratory Writing Research Group) and Ghazal Mosadeq (founder of Pamenar Press, an independent cross-cultural,
multi-lingual publisher based in UK, Canada and Iran). The winning stories were judged by N G Bristow (screen writer, director and visual artist running the MA in Directing Fiction at Goldsmiths, University of London), and Andrew Stuck (Founding Director of the Museum of Walking)
