Medical progress blasting us ahead… technological progress leaving us behind… politics setting us against each other without providing coherent answers… It’s hard to know if this the start of a new and exciting era or the end of the world. But probably it’s just business as usual for humans.

The “Potcake Chapbook” series is named for the dogs of the Bahamas and the Caribbean – strays that live off the burnt scrapings of cooking pots. The poems in the series are a mixed bunch – but the potcake of our logo wears a bow tie to show that he and all the poems are formal. These poems are memorable in part because they rhyme and scan, as all truly memorable poetry does. We subscribe to the use of form, no matter how formless the times in which we live.

#POSTPOETICTRAUMA – Kosal Khiev

Kosal Khiev is a poet, tattoo artist, and survivor of the US prison system. Born in a Thai refugee camp, Kosal’s family fled to the U.S in 1981. Kosal’s family left the aftermath of the Khmer Rouge war for the promise of peace and prosperity in America. Instead of the American dream, Kosal’s family lived in grim public housing with scarce social services. Kosal admits to making poor choices as a teenager that led him into more violence, poverty, and eventually prison. At the age of 16, Kosal was arrested in a gang fight and charged with attempted murder. Kosal was tried as an adult and sentenced to 16 years in a state penitentiary. While serving 14 years in prison he discovered spoken word poetry from a former Vietnam War veteran.  Upon release in 2011, the U.S. government deported him to Cambodia, a country he had never been To. Spoken word Is a creative channel to tell his story and transform his anger, regrets, and experiences into a poetic art form.

In recognition and celebration of the 70th anniversary of the NHS, discover the traces of East London’s medical past. This map reveals the hidden relics of the hospitals that existed prior to the inception of the NHS, and links together St Bartholomew’s Hospital, The Royal London Hospital and  Mile End Hospital.

The map was commissioned for the 2018 Being Human Festival. The festival highlights the ways in which the humanities can inspire and enrich our everyday lives, help us to understand ourselves, our relationships with others, and the challenges we face in a changing world.

The Map was designed by Alban Low (artist), Richard Meunier (Archivist, The Royal
London Hospital Museum) and Harvey Wells (Senior Lecturer in Medical Education, Barts and the London School of Medicine).
