Canopy: Secrets of the trees

This anthology is published to coincide with the Urban Tree Festival in May 2023. The pieces included were selected from over 160 entries to a competition run over the winter months of 2022/3. Entrants were asked to write about “Secrets of the Trees” as poems or stories in 250 words or fewer.

The theme of “Secrets of the Trees” was set by our previous winners: M.L. Grieve for poetry and Joanna Walworth for prose. They chose the theme as they felt that “Our urban trees have stood central to the story of urban development and urban living for centuries. What human stories have they witnessed? Time to give the urban trees a voice!”

The Book of Matthew – Matthew J. Sokulsky

In Matthew Sokulsky’s brilliant debut publication, religion remains unsimple. Revealed in a suite of poems as strange, jarring and complex as its namesake. Questioning, while enveloping religious realities, this booklet of surreal admiration celebrates the essentially human, eccentric and faith-ish in poems from a new voice in Australian and British literature.

The series mark the first publications of many poets who are very likely to be significant presences on the UK scene and beyond in the coming years.

Emptpy Poems – Martin Wakefield

“Martin Wakefield’s ravishing sequence of ‘Emptpy Poems’ is elegant, spare and haunting. And haunted. The spectral traces of Apollinaire’s poems are still just visible beneath Wakefield’s enigmatic creation. There seems to be a strange attraction between the poems on the surface and the ghost poems beneath such that, in places, the surface poems shiver into italics to mirror the font change of the trace poems. Sometimes this becomes an ‘interference’ caused by the spectral poems, mysteriously pushing at words within the poems above, or pulling them into new spellings, compressions and splittings. This resonates powerfully with the operations of the mind itself and how it responds to the energies and interruptions of its memories, its subconscious, and its physical embodiment, as well as reflecting on the way all language is similarly shaped and inhabited by ghosts.”
— Susie Campbell

Rouen – Wayne Sleeth

Old master of sleight-of-hand,
conjuring cathedrals
out of thin air

Inspired directly by Monet’s sublime series of paintings of the façade of Rouen Cathedral, Sleeth has composed thirty new haiku on the subject to accompany a selection of his numerous paintings and ‘pola-paintings’ of ‘Notre Dame de Rouen’. This limited edition chapbook, published in an ongoing collaboration with Sampson Low, marks a chapter in a body of work which Sleeth will present to the public in a series of exhibitions starting in 2023…

Anglo-french artist and writer Wayne Sleeth has since 2018 been painting, sketching, photographing (with a battery of polaroid cameras) and writing haiku about the Cathédrale de Rouen, an iconic presence since the Middle Ages, especially for Sleeth’s mentor in art—the impressionist Claude Monet.

Amniotic City – Lucy Furlong

A City awash with feeling, topography of the Goddess. History in the cracks, a glimpse of green between the earth and sky still exists through an open door, where X marks the spot for a conversation with Her. The River Fleet runs deep under the City of London, carrying the hopes and dreams of the workers scurrying across its surface, held in the belly of a sleeping female, waiting to be reborn.

11 years after its first publication, Lucy Furlong revisits Amniotic City in a series of new explorations, once again poking her nose in the nooks, passageways and liminal spaces therein. She discovers new terrain and new stories in this second edition of her poetry map.

“ Furlong’s poems are recognisably sited; potential liturgies for re-enactment. They are proposals, less bent on cutting passages than on following clues to alignments of desire in patterns immersed in the terrain; an interweaving of intimacy and otherness.”
Phil Smith, The Routledge International Handbook of Walking

FRACTURED LIGHT: AN ANTHOLOGY – Victoria Kaye

With a background in the visual arts, I take a huge delight in the mysteries of colour. How white light refracts into seven glorious hues within the visual spectrum, bounded on either side by infra-red and ultra-violet is a wonder and an endless fascination. So I invited a few like-minded poets who I knew would share my passion to join me and contribute to this collection. All I asked of them was that they use the colours of the rainbow (as identified by Sir Isaac Newton) to act as a catalyst for their work and to take that forward in whatever way they wished and they have certainly done that. Subjects range from Bodmin Moor to debates about Newton’s classification system to the artist, Yves Klein’s patent for international blue to political/ecological concerns and more. I have been aware of some of these poets for a lot longer than others – often through a myriad of family links but I feel a very close connection to all of them and I must thank them for taking the time to support me in this project. Another ‘thank you’ also goes to my fellow writer/poets who have kindly provided introductory essays to the contributing poets.

Launched at the European Poetry Festival on 27th June 2022

An anthology of poetic collaborations from across Europe

From its inception the European Poetry Festival has worked in partnership with the Austrian Cultural Forum London to present remarkable events that celebrate live literature, innovation in poetry and collaboration. Since 2018 poets from across Austria have visited the UK annually, to present new works made in pairs with local, British-based counterparts. These live poems, made for these nights, find themselves in print, for the first time, for this special, limited edition anthology. From the multi-lingual to the visual, from the the theatrical to the conceptual, these poems are as dynamic on the page, newly fashioned for that purpose, as they were when shared live, in the remarkable venue of the
ACF London.

The European Poetry Festival celebrates, in the UK and beyond, the grand resurgence in avant-garde and literary poetry that has marked the 21st century in Europe. It aims to not only innovate what a live poetry experience might be, but to inculcate community and engagement between poets across the continent, as well as between new audiences and complex poetries.
